There are a few steps to help any Business get their start successfully here in Crafton Borough!
1. Contact the Building Inspector/Zoning Officer to verify that your Business complies with local zoning regulations and codes and to ensure that your building has a current Annual Fire Inspection.
2. Submit a Business Occupancy Permit and the appropriate fee. If you are a landlord of a rental property you will need to complete a rental inspection for each of your units, and then upon any change in tenant.
3. Register your business (or rental property). Complete the attached application and submit to Jordan Tax Service, Inc. along with the $10.00 fee. If you have employees, you will need to set up a Tax ID Number. All questions regarding taxes should be directed to Jordan Tax Service, Inc., at (724) 731-2310.
4. File for a Building Permit if you will be doing renovations, making structural changes, doing mechanical, plumbing, or electrical work or installing a sign.

5. Common Permits/Annual Filings required for Businesses/Landlords:
- Amusement Device Permits – Any mechanical, electronic or computer-oriented device which, upon insertion of a coin, currency, metal disc, slug, card, plate, token or other means of payment, may be operated as a game, ride, entertainment or amusement, whether or not registering a score, and whether or not offering a prize.
- Business Occupancy Permits - No dwelling unit or commercial premises which has been vacated may be occupied until the owner has secured an occupancy permit from the Building Inspector. A separate permit must be issued for each dwelling unit or commercial premises. Responsibility for compliance with this section shall be with the owner.
- Building Permits – Building permits are required for new construction or alterations of any existing dwelling. Permits are required for plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work. Additionally, permits are required for most fences, driveways, parking pads, swimming pools, decks and patios, roof replacement. Please check with the Building Inspection office prior to construction.
- Dumpster Permit - No dumpster, roll-off container or large bag-type container shall be permitted to stand on or obstruct any street, alley or right-of-way within the Borough of Crafton without first obtaining a permit.
- Landlord Registration & Occupancy Report - Landlords and commercial property owners are required to file a business registration and tenant occupancy report (between May and June) of each year.
- Security Alarm Permits – No person shall install, have installed, own, use or possess an operative alarm system without obtaining a permit from the Borough of Crafton. Said permit shall include, but not be limited to, providing a means of identifying the alarm system service and persons who may be called in the event of an alarm and the subject’s premises are unattended.
- Sign Permits – The Borough of Crafton Code of Ordinances has strict guidelines outlined under Chapter 225 Zoning, Article XV Signs. A permit is required before construction or alteration of any sign within the Borough of Crafton.
- Solicitations Permits – Issued by the Police Secretary, please contact the non-emergency police line at (412) 921-2016. Regular business hours are 9AM to 3PM, Monday through Friday.
6. Taxation for Businesses & Landlords - Taxes for the Borough of Crafton are collected by Jordan Tax Service, Inc.
- Borough Property Taxes – 8.59 mills
- Mercantile Taxes – Wholesale Vendor 1.5 mills (0.0015), Retail Vendor 1 Mill (0.001)
- Business Privilege License - $10.00 Annually
- Business Privilege Taxes – Service and/or Rentals 1.5 mills (0.0015)
- Earned Income Taxes – 0.5% to Crafton Borough, 0.5% to Carlynton School District
- Local Service Taxes - $52.00 Annually per employee
7. Trash Removal - Commercial Buildings, Businesses, and Multi-Family Dwellings with 9 or more units are responsible to provide their own private Trash & Recycle Collection Services. The Ordinance Enforcement Officer can assist you with the rules and regulations of placement and storage of your dumpsters or receptacles. Filing A Permit
Crafton utilizes the Cloudpermit software for Residential Building Permits, Residential Zoning Use Permits, Residential Occupancy Permits & Rental Inspections, and Code Compliance Permits & Property Complaints. For Commercial Properties and Multi-Family Dwellings with 3 or More units, Crafton partners with Code-Sys. Additionally, all Electrical Permits are handled through Code-Sys.
