Do I Need A Permit?
The Borough Code of Ordinances can be challenging to read and comprehend. To assist you, we have compiled a list of the most common types of permits required in Crafton, along with a brief explanation of their uses and purposes.
✓ Amusement Devices: Any mechanical, electronic or computer-oriented device which, upon insertion of a coin, currency, metal disc, slug, card, plate, token or other means of payment, may be operated as a game, ride, entertainment or amusement, whether or not registering a score, and whether or not offering a prize. Commercial Property Owners and Business must register these devices annually with the Building Inspection Office.
✓ Annual Fire Inspection: Owners of Commercial Properties and Multi-Family Dwellings with 3 or More Units are required to file an annual fire inspection. The purpose of this permit is to verify compliance of fire codes and safety requirements.
✓ Business Registration: All Businesses and Landlords operating within the Borough of Crafton must file an annual business registration via Jordan Tax Service, Inc. For more information on Businesses in Crafton please go to the Businesses & Landlords page.
✓ Commercial Building Permits: New construction or alterations of Commercial Properties and Multi-Family Dwellings with 3 or more units require a Commercial Building Permit. Commercial Permits are handled by Code-Sys. Commercial Building Permits are also required for any plumbing, mechanical or electrical work. Additionally, projects that require structural changes will require a building permit. These may include, but are not limited to, interior or exterior renovations, decks and or patios, windows or door replacement, or roof replacement.
✓ Dumpster Permit: Dumpster permits are required for all dumpsters prior to the placement on any public street. Dumpsters placed on private property, such as a parking pad or driveway, do not require a permit.
✓ Keeping of Chickens: Residents are permitted in specific zoning districts to own and house chickens on their property upon approval of this annual permit. Residents should review the Borough's Code on Urban Chickens and speak with the Ordinance Enforcement officer with any questions prior to the purchase of their chickens or supplies.
✓ Occupancy & Zoning Use: Zoning Use and Occupancy permit is required prior to the sale of any property within the Borough of Crafton. The purpose of this permit is to verify conforming use of the property and to ensure all compliance of building codes and safety requirements.
✓ Recreational Burning: Any resident or person within the Borough of Crafton is required to obtain an annual permit for the purpose of recreational burning for entertainment purposes. Crafton Borough follows the Allegheny County Open Burning Regulations.
✓ Rental Inspections: Landlords are required to register with the Borough and receive a safety inspection every three years. Please use the link above to register your rental property or business. The Borough will contact you for inspection scheduling.
✓ Residential Building Permit: New construction or alterations of Residential Properties require a Residential Building Permit. Residential Permits are handled by Code-Sys. Residential Building Permits are also required for any plumbing, mechanical or electrical work. Additionally, projects that require structural changes will require a building permit. These may include, but are not limited to, interior or exterior renovations, decks and or patios, windows or door replacement, or roof replacement.
✓ Security Alarm Permit: Residential and Commercial Property Owners are required to file a one-time alarm permit with the Administrative Office upon installation of any security alarm.
✓ Zoning Permits: Zoning Permits are required for construction or installation of a property accessory such as, but not limited to, swimming pools, fences, chicken coops or sheds, patios, and driveways or parking pads. Please always contact the Building Inspector to verify if a Zoning or Building permit is needed.
